Braces are a great way to improve the way your smile looks. It doesn’t matter if your smile is “imperfect” because you have crooked teeth, your jaw is misaligned, or because you have TMJ. Here at Cornelius Dental Clinic, we believe that there’s only one thing that’s better than braces: Invisalign. Before you decide to take this route to “perfecting” your teeth, we’d like to share some information with you.

Understanding Invisalign

You can think of Invisalign as being like braces. They’re a set of clear aligners that work to transparently adjust your teeth. Made of clear plastic, this is a great way to improve your smile’s looks or any little dental issues you may have. Unfortunately, they’re not meant to fix complex dental issues though. You should also know that this treatment requires more time than braces if you’re trying to align gaps in your teeth or align them.

Length Of Treatment

It’s important to understand that Invisalign is a process. Throughout this process, you must come to our office for a biweekly appointment so we can switch out your trays. While not in our office, it’s important for you to wear these aligners for 20-22 hours daily. Although this may sound impossible, it’s something you must commit to doing before you start your treatment. This is important because each aligner encourages your teeth to move a small amount – so small you may not see any results for 4-6 weeks and noticeable results typically don’t appear for 6-10 weeks.

Exactly how long treatment takes you depends on the severity of your issue. We’ll need to see you in person to determine this, but know that adults will typically wear Invisalign for about 12 months.

Expectations From Invisalign

The only time that you shouldn’t wear your Invisalign is when you’re eating any type of food. This is because you don’t want to expose your aligners to the strong impact your teeth undergo when chewing food. If you were to do so, you’d either damage or crack your aligners – at the very least you’d make them difficult to clean. Otherwise, it’s important for you to be committed to wearing your aligners.

While you’re wearing your Invisalign aligners, you should expect to feel a small amount of pain, but this will be a lot less than what’s associated with traditional braces. We understand that this pain will be unpleasant, but we want you to know that it should subside when you adjust to the new set of aligners. Remembering these things should help make the pain endurable, but if not, simply use some of your local pharmacies’s over the counter pain medication to counteract it and make your treatment much more tolerable for you.

Hopefully, you now have enough information to decide whether you’re interested in speaking with us about whether Invisalign is the right treatment for you. In this case, your next step is to call Cornelius Dental Clinic at (971) 317-9323 to schedule an appointment to discuss things with us.
